Sound Studies & Auditory Narratives #3 // Power, Politics, Performance (Ibraaz)

Cosmic Breath – Joe Namy

Ibraaz means “to shine a light on something that is otherwise in darkness” in arabic, and the political sonic knowledge that the building both creates and archives does exactly that. This is exemplified by the Earshot Library in Residence which showcases Earshot’s methods for using sound as a political forensic tool – wherein they are able to use sound to determine whether a voice is manufactured or authentic, or the flightpath of a drone, or the position of soldiers by the location of their echoes. The work of Earshot is truly incredible, and the intense sonic affect of the exhibition portrays the immense political struggles that Earshot works to address.
